Description
VULKAN Composite
shafts are especially suited for drive systems requiring low mass
and/or where there is a great distance between shaft bearings.
VULKAN composite shafts are used successfully world wide for
marine propulsion and power generation, where reducing weight and
eliminating intermediate shaft bearings were of high priority.
They are currently in service on board fast ferries, patrol boats,
work boats, yachts and stationary machinery. VULKAN Composite
shafts are made from a carbon fiber reinforced synthetic material
using the latest manufacturing techniques. The carbon fibers are
wound in individual layers which are arranged in a criss-cross
fashion with a specific winding angle relative to each other. This
allows for a shaft that can transmit torque in either direction
and through careful design the winding angle can be varied
according to the desired shaft characteristics i.e. torsional and
bending stiffnesses. The VULKAN Composite shaft utilizes bonded
metal flange connections at both ends for connecting to the
flanges in the drive train.
